Key Requirements and Changes for USCG-Approved (CGA) Vests in 2026
For 2026, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) is fully implementing a new regulatory framework that shifts from traditional "Type I-V" classifications to a performance-based "Level" system.
New Labeling System (Levels)
Starting in 2026, you will see new labels based on buoyancy (measured in Newtons) and intended use, rather than the old Type I-III system:
- Level 50 (Buoyancy Aid): Designed for near-shore, calm water where fast rescue is possible. Generally not rated to turn an unconscious person face-up
- Level 70 (Nearshore Cruising): Recommended for general boating and paddling, suitable for most recreational use in protected waters
- Level 100+ (Offshore/High Risk): Designed for higher speeds, rougher water, or further from shore. These are required to turn an unconscious wearer face-up.
